Maya Only offers 2 ways of creasing an edge/point, either full or partial crease.
In the following little movie i'll show you an approach to control the crease.

The movie first demonstrated the 2 default cases.

To make a crease somewhere between a full and partial, you'll start with a full crease,
Refine the creased edge/point 1, 2, 3 or even more times, then perform an UNCREASE.
This will leve you with a sharp crease, still with a radius.

For those of you only running on Maya Complete we'll take the basemesh and do one
polygonal subdivision on the whole basemesh, pull some points so the polyhand looks something like the level1
SubD hand

This script simulates SubD modeling.
The nails are easily recreated also with polysmooth. With an extrusion of the nail faces you can shape
the nail by dragging points after the extrude, much in the same manner as shown in the tutorial.
